Porsche Talent Team’s Ella Seidel shines in opener

Successful start to the 48th Porsche Tennis Grand Prix: Porsche Talent Team’s Ella Seidel secured herself a berth in the qualifying finals with an impressive display. The main draw pairings will be ‟pulled out of the hat” on Sunday by the local hero Laura Siegemund.

The 2025 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is up and running – and Germany’s Ella Seidel immediately produced a tennis highlight. In her first-round match in qualifying, the 20-year-old Porsche Talent Team member was in control right from the start against Yanina Wickmayer. Against the former world No. 12 from Belgian, she impressed when winning 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 25 minutes. For Seidel, it is her first ever win at the long-standing Stuttgart tournament. Her next opponent is the top-seeded Dayana Yastremska. Currently the world No. 46, the Ukrainian came out on top in the day’s first match 6-1, 6-4 against Ana Konjuh from Croatia.

Things did not go so well though for two other young German players from the Porsche Talent Team. Nastasja Schunk battled hard against the 37-year-old Italian Sara Errani but despite winning the first set, the 21-year-old was eventually defeated 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a match lasting two hours five minutes. For Mariella Thamm, it was her maiden appearance on the WTA stage – and a special experience. The 15-year-old youngster faced Erika Andreeva and produced an excellent performance that included some scintillating rallies. Despite losing 6-3, 6-4, the junior was able to gain valuable experience for her future tennis career.
