A perfect qualifying session is crucial on the Formula One circuit through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo. The Supercup season opener once again demonstrated this. Theo Oeverhaus secured pole position at the wheel of the Porsche 911 Cup of French team Martinet by Alméras. The driver from Osnabrück made full use of this advantage at the start. He led into the first corner and maintained his position at the front throughout the entire 17-lap race.
Andrea Bristot is contesting his first Supercup season and had never previously raced in Monaco. The Italian from Dinamic Motorsport surprised many by setting the second-fastest lap in qualifying, earning a front-row start alongside Oeverhaus. Displaying the composure of a seasoned campaigner, the rookie fended off attacks from Gustav Burton during the opening metres of the race. The GP Elite driver accelerated side by side with Bristot all the way up the climb towards Casino Square. However, being off the racing line, the Briton was eventually forced to yield. By finishing second overall, Bristot also claimed victory in the Rookie classification.
Burton successfully defended third place against the charging Robert de Haan. The defending Monaco race winner from BWT Lechner Racing was the only driver among the leading group to gain a position compared with his starting spot. Porsche Junior Flynt Schuring brought his Schumacher CLRT-entered Porsche home in fifth place.
Joining Bristot on the Rookie podium were Brazilian driver Matheus Ferreira (GP Elite) and Luxembourg’s Chester Kieffer (Schumacher CLRT). The trophies for both the overall and Rookie classifications were presented by Hollywood actor Patrick Dempsey. The American is familiar with the Porsche Supercup thanks to two guest appearances in the VIP 911. In Monaco, he briefly sat in a Porsche 911 GT1. The historic racing car, which competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1996, led the Cup cars from the remote paddock to the pit lane.
“Fans witnessed an exciting start to the Supercup season. I was particularly impressed by the fact that the numerous intense battles for position were conducted with great discipline. A Monaco race without a Safety Car intervention is a rarity across all racing categories. My congratulations go especially to Theo Oeverhaus on his first victory in the Principality and to Andrea Bristot, who reached the podium after his first race as a rookie,” said Oliver Schwab, Project Manager of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
Driver comments after the race
Theo Oeverhaus (DEU/Martinet by Alméras), 1st place: “Actually, I wanted to take a calm approach to the race. But Andrea Bristot put me under real pressure in the early stages. Fortunately, I was able to increase the pace slightly and build a small gap. Winning in Monaco – it simply doesn’t get any better than that.”
Andrea Bristot (ITA/Dinamic Motorsport), 2nd place, Rookie winner: “Of course, as a racing driver you’re never completely satisfied with second place. But I’m still delighted with the result. I would never have expected to stand on the podium in my very first Supercup race.”
Porsche Junior Flynt Schuring (NLD/Schumacher CLRT), 5th place: “A Monaco race without a Safety Car is unusual. As a result, the tyres started to overheat a little. Unfortunately, a small mistake cost me one position.”
Jaap van Lagen (NLD/Martinet by Alméras), 7th place: “I thoroughly enjoyed my 100th Supercup race. Thanks to a rocket start, I was able to gain two positions within the first few metres.”
